Our first podcast episode of 2024 is finally out and it is our term to discuss some of the hottest Eurovision news at the moment.

In this episode, Sebi, Jan and Dave discuss all the latest hot Eurovision news. Besides chatting about their favourite songs in the national finals of Spain, Croatia, Norway and Moldova, there are also some more serious topics around this episode. Are AI and autotune coming to Eurovision? Are all the returning artists a good or a bad thing? Is Eurovision, as we know it, coming to an end?

Besides talking about our favourite songs in the national finals of Spain, Croatia, Norway and Moldova, there have also been some rather serious thoughts about the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö.

In the most recent events, the Norwegian broadcaster NRK has requested a statement from the EBU, regarding the use of Autotune in Eurovision. Melodi Grand Prix, the Norwegian national selection for Eurovision, allows the use of Autotune, while the Eurovision Song Contest has never permitted the use of autotune, up until this year, when the EBU has responded to NRK’s request.

When it comes to Autotune in Eurovision, Jan has a very clear opinion:

“I think it could be very offensive to professional singers, those who have great control over their voice and know how to deliver live. I know that technology is great and I don’t mind autotune in studio tracks but when it comes to live competitions, like Eurovision, there shouldn’t be autotune, which can help an average singer to deliver a better live performance than a fantastic singer without autotune.”

Furthermore, the big amount of returning artists in the current national final season has raised some questions among our team. Is Eurovision slowly becoming a fan contest? Sebi has said the following:

“Do you know these fictional, fan-made Song Contests that go around on YouTube or TikTok? They usually pick their favourite acts from each country and of course these people would probably pick The Roop for Lithuania, KEiiNO for Norway, Konstrakta for Serbia and Let 3 for Croatia. If all of these go to Eurovision, 2024 might just as well be called the FanFiction Song Contest.”
