We’re back with the third of four interviews this week with artists from Heat 3 of Melodi Grand Prix 2024! The delightful Annprincess recently visited our studio to converse about her upcoming performance of Save Me!

Saturday will see Annprincess compete in MGP for the first time, and she was over the moon with excitement when she got the call that she was in:

“My reaction was like ‘Ha ha ha, you’re not really calling me to tell me that I’m on MGP, that’s not true!’ That phone call, I should have recorded my reaction because that was the best phone call I’ve ever had in my life!”

Annprincess left Liberia with her mother under harrowing circumstances when she was just a child. They emigrated to Norway, where Annprincess grew up and went to school, where she was often bullied for being ‘different.’ The emotion from these experiences is evident in Save Me:

“[The song] is about my experience in middle school and high school. We came to Norway when I was 7-8 years old and we were one of the few Liberians in my really small town, and growing up being different in school with kids that look nothing like you is a really hard thing to do, and kids are mean. Kids can be very mean, they’re very honest, and they don’t have any filter, so they just made me aware of the fact that I didn’t fit in, I didn’t belong. So this song is about the people that don’t fit in, the people that feel different, lonely, but it’s so important for me to say also that the song is about owning your difference and standing up to the fact that you do belong, and I think that’s something you’re also going to see on the stage!“
