On Friday, Ireland chose its 57th Eurovision entry, and anyone watching the Late Late Show on RTÉ can tell you that the fan favourite is off to Malmö.

From the beginning of the show, the small studio audience was boisterous in support of the eventual winner, Bambie Thug who described their song Doomsday Blue as theatrical “Ouija pop” during the show.

At multiple occasions during the Late Late Show, jury members mentioned that Ireland had a choice to make, either go with a safe entry (i.e. Erica-Cody’s Love Me Like I Do) or go with something different — and that is what Ireland’s national jury and televote overwhelmingly chose.

Ireland makes an interesting case study for Eurovision fans. Once a powerhouse, Ireland’s former success has all but dried up. Since the advent of Semi Finals in 2004, the Emerald Isle has only been in the Grand Final eight times, and only two of those in the last ten years.

The good news for Irish fans is that the last time Eurovision was held in Malmö, Ireland did qualify for the Final (just don’t look at the results)! But is this the song to take them to the Final in 2024?

Here is what the hosts of Building Bridges think of Doomsday Blue — Ireland’s song for Eurovision 2024:

Jan: ★★☆☆☆

The Irish Eurovision entry offers a unique blend of chaos and intrigue. Its distinctiveness may captivate some, while leaving others bewildered. The outcome in Malmö remains uncertain, as its unconventional nature could either charm or puzzle the audience.

Sebi: ★★☆☆☆

I’m happy that Ireland is finally doing something different, but it doesn’t click with me. It’s trying very hard to be sophisticated and artistic, but it ends up being just messy.

Dave: ★☆☆☆☆

I do like the cheerful bridge, but the song as a whole isn’t for me. I’d love to see Ireland back in the Final in Malmö, but I can’t see that happening at this point. Perhaps the bigger stage in Malmö Arena will allow Bambie Thug the opportunity to stage this in a way that will appeal to Eurofans across the continent!
