Of the nine acts competing in the Final of Germany’s Eurovision — Das Deutsche Finale on Friday, 16th February, only two of them are in German, and we had the pleasure to speak with the artists singing one of them!
Inspired by the ‘Neue Deutsche Welle’ era of German music, Galant is a duo made up of Mona from Munich, and Paul from Mannheim. Together, their entry Katze has become one of the most talked about in the German selection for 2024.
As Galant is a fairly new duo, we asked them where the idea came from to enter Das Deutsche Final, and it turns out, they got some really good advice:
“I remember that our manager Maggie [Magdalena Dauber], she told us ‘Guys, why don’t we participate in the Eurovision Song Contest thing, we can send our songs – let’s do it!’ Paul and me were like ‘I don’t know, should we really do that? Yeah why not, what could happen?’”
– Mona Meiller
Their song Katze means ‘cat’ in English, which has lead some listeners to believe the song is about a particular feline friend, but the duo explained that there is a much deeper meaning to the song:
“Many people think I’m actually singing about a cat, but I’m not singing about a cat. The cat represents a person, obviously. It would be a bit easy to sing 2m40 about a cat. There’s more behind it! […] The cat basically stands for a person who, due to bad experiences in childhood and in the past, is no longer allowed to receive love, and is kind of trapped in a destructive behaviour pattern.”
– Mona Meiller
“We also intended that you can choose to have fun with the song and sing ‘Sie ist eine Katze’ because this is easy enough for everybody, even if people don’t speak German, but at the same time for those who like to listen more closely, there is a deeper meaning hidden behind it.”
– Paul
You’ll have to listen to Mona explain the full detailed meaning in our interview (Spotify link above)!
