One of Eurovision’s oldest national selections just wrapped up in at broadcaster DR’s Koncerthuset. Dansk Melodi Grand Prix (DMGP) was introduced in 1957, and has produced three Eurovision winners for Denmark!
After a fairly successful 2010s at Eurovision — winning in 2013 and only two non-qualifications — the 2020s have not been kind on the Danes, with Fyr og Flamme, Reddi, and Reiley all failing to reach the Grand Final at Eurovision.
The results came from a 50-50 televote-jury split, and for the first time since 2012, the jury had international representation. Members were included from the last 5 Eurovision winning nations (Israel, the Netherlands, Italy, Ukraine, and Sweden).
After round 1 of voting, the top 3 moved on to a ‘Superfinal’:
- Saba – Sand
- Aura Dione – Mirrorball Of Hope
- Basim – Johnny
- RoseeLu – Real Love
- Ublu – Planetary Hearts
- Janus Wiberg – I Need Your Love
- Chu Chu – The Chase (Zoom Zoom)
- Stella – Sign Here
The Danish Top 3 performed a second time, the televote reopened and the juries picked their favourites, and the final result saw:
- Saba – Sand
- Basim – Johnny
- Janus Wiberg – I Need Your Love
Here is what the hosts of Building Bridges think of Sand — Denmark’s song for Eurovision 2024:
Jan: ★★★★☆
In an electrifying performance, Saba delivered a powerhouse rendition of her hit ‘Sand’, commanding the stage with raw emotion and unwavering charisma. Each note resonated deeply, igniting a euphoric energy that captivated the audience in Copenhagen from start to finish.
Sebi: ★★★★☆
This was my favorite song of DMGP 2024 and I’m very pleased that Denmark chose this. Saba is a great performer and ‘Sand’ is a very catchy song. It’s not the biggest standout in the current line-up but I’m glad that Denmark is obviously trying to improve!
Dave: ★★★★☆
I’m very pleased for Saba. I’ve been listening to ‘Sand’ for weeks now, and was thrilled her vocals live were just as good – if not better – than the studio version. The public and juries picked the best entry for Malmö – let’s see her break that NQ streak!
Are you happy with Denmark’s choice? Saba will compete in the first half of Semi Final 2 in Malmö!
