In its 16th edition, Estonia’s selection show Eesti Laul didn’t leave a lot of suspense tonight, although at times it felt as long as a night of Sanremo! There had been a clear favourite amongst fans and bookmakers, and it indeed came to fruition.

After a brutal Semi Final a month ago that saw 15 artists slashed to just five, tonight they competed with the five acts that were pre-selected to take part in the Final, including Brother Apollo who we recently chatted with on the podcast!

Tonight’s results came from a 50-50 televote-jury split, and was divided into two rounds of voting. After Round 1, the Top 3 moved on to a ‘Superfinal’:

  • Ollie — My Friend
  • 5miinust and Puuluup — (Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi
  • Nele-Liis Vaiksoo — Käte ümber jää
  • Anet Vaikmaa — Serotoniin (13 points)
  • Daniel Levi — Over the Moon (12 points)
  • Carlos Ukareda — Never Growing Up (8 points)
  • Ewert and The Two Dragons — Hold Me Now (7 points)
  • Uudo Sepp and Sarah Murray — Still Love (6 points)
  • Peter Põder — Korra veel (6 points)
  • Brother Apollo — Bad Boy (4 points)

The Superfinal was decided 100% based on only the televote, and after the dust settled:

  • 5miinust and Puuluup — (Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi
  • Ollie — My Friend
  • Nele-Liis Vaiksoo — Käte ümber jää

Estonia will be looking to keep its great Eesti Laul record in tact. Since its introduction as Estonia’s selection show in 2009, Estonia has only failed to qualify for the Grand Final at Eurovision just five times.

Here is what the hosts of Building Bridges think of (Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi [We don’t (yet) know anything about (these) drugs] — Estonia’s song for Eurovision 2024:

Jan: ★★★★☆

Blending urban beats with rustic charm, the modern Hip-Hop & nu-Folk track seamlessly intertwines two contrasting genres. The smooth flow of rap verses over acoustic melodies creates a captivating fusion. It even has the strange instruments Måns told us every good Eurovision song should have in ‘Love Love Peace Peace’! 🙂

Sebi: ★★★★★

What an amazing entry from Estonia! I don’t even know where to begin. It’s insanely catchy, it has a sick and memorable choreography and to top it all off, Estonian is finally back in Eurovision. Couldn’t be happier!

Dave: ★★☆☆☆

I don’t think anyone is surprised this won. Their energy is infectious and they had the audience with them every step of the way. They’ll need to bring even more energy with them to Malmö, as the crowd there won’t be able to sing along with them in Estonian. I love the chorus, but I get lost throughout the rest of the song.

Are you happy with Estonia’s choice? 5miinust and Puuluup will compete in the second half of Semi Final 2 in Malmö!
