On Thursday, we found out the artist and the song that will represent Switzerland at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest. It’s the rapper Nemo who will fly the Swiss flag in Malmö with their song The Code.
Nemo is perhaps a surprising choice for Switzerland. They last released an EP in 2017, and their only EP to chart was Nemos Clownfisch from 2015, which spent one week on the Swiss charts at number 95. Nemo’s last single to chart was 5i uf de Uhr from 2019. It spent two weeks on the Swiss singles chart, peaking at number 31. It would appear Nemo is relaunching their career with a Eurovision participation!
Nemo explained the meaning of their song:
“‘The Code’ is about the journey I started with the realisation that I am neither a man nor a woman. Finding myself has been a long and often difficult process for me. But nothing feels better than the freedom I have gained by realising that I am non-binary.”
— Nemo
Here is our review on the Swiss entry for Malmö:
Jan: ★★★★☆
I appreciate the boldness and creativity in the song, and I’m excited to see how it performs on the main Eurovision stage in Malmö!
Sebi: ★★★★☆
This song is wild, dramatic and completely unexpected. The surprise factor is strong and will have the audience on the edge of their seats. I really hope that Nemo is able to pull those high notes live. If the staging is equally good as the music video, this will be a certain qualifier in Malmö.
Dave: ★★☆☆☆
It’s an interesting mix of genres with the rap part coming from nowhere. While there’s nothing like this in the Eurovision 2024 lineup so far, I’m not sure that’s a good thing for Nemo. I’m a little concerned this might get lost among the other songs. He’ll need some great staging to stand out among the rest
