Not long ago, Jan and Dave were fortunate enough to speak to a phenomenal singer from Belgium, who is set to perform at that country’s national final Eurosong on 1st February.
Lisa Van Rossem is known professionally as LEEZ. She’s known to most Belgians as the sister of singer Metejoor, even though she’s been a musician for much longer!
LEEZ is taking this moment in her career to emerge from her brother’s shadow, and chart her own path. Her success has been building, just this summer her single Toxic Lullaby was nominated for the ‘Summer Hit’ award on Belgian radio!
According to VRT’s Eurosong rules, nothing has been made public about LEEZ’s song — we couldn’t even ask her what the title is! Of course, we know now that she will sing Perfectly Imperfect at Eurosong. So instead, we asked what she could tell us about the song, without getting herself in any hot water:
“Well, I cannot share the title, even though I really, really want to because I really love it. So it’s kind of hard for me right now, but I can tell you something about the feeling that it gives. And for me, it’s very important to share a message that goes a little deeper […] that can give people comfort that they’re okay the way they are. I’m not the skinniest artist. I’m also not the biggest artist, you know, I am very normal. And these days being normal is almost like not good enough. And I wanna say, like, the way you are, you’re good enough. That’s my general message that I want to send to everybody all the time. And it’s somewhere hidden in the song maybe as well.”

Interestingly, this won’t be LEEZ’s first time attempting to get to Eurovision. Twenty years ago, she entered the Belgian selection for Junior Eurovision as half of the duo Lila. Should LEEZ win Eurosong, it would be perfect timing:
“Exactly 20 years ago in 2005, I was competing with a friend of mine, for the Eurovision Song Contest for kids here in Belgium. We didn’t make it to actually represent Belgium on the stage, but it was a a huge, experience that we had, and that’s why I’ve waited to compete now because I really wanted to it to be the 20 years after, and maybe we can now have the full circle moment.”

Since the Belgian broadcaster VRT is keeping things very hush hush this year, we’ll have to watch Eurosong on Saturday, 1st February to see what LEEZ has in store for her live performance!
Until then, be sure and check out the full interview with LEEZ (above) to find out if her brother Metejoor will be involved in her Eurosong performance, what she might have planned for her staging, and some of her favourite Eurovision memories. The episode is available now wherever you get your favourite Eurovision podcasts!
We wish LEEZ the best of luck at Eurosong in February! Let us know in the comments and on our social media profiles @buildingbridgespod what you thought of the interview and if you think we’ll see her in Basel in May waiving the Belgian flag!
