When it comes to Eurovision legends, one of them is surely Anna Sahlene—the Swedish powerhouse who captured Europe’s heart with her unforgettable performance of Runaway in 2002. Over two decades later, Anna is making waves once again with her latest Eesti Laul entry, Love Me Low. In a conversation on the Building Bridges Eurovision Podcast, she shared her journey, memories, and ambitions, proving once more why she’s a beloved icon in the Eurovision community.
Born into a musical family—both her parents were classical pianists—Anna’s love for music was practically destined. Growing up surrounded by melodies and harmonies, she ventured into musical theatre, landing roles like Grace in Annie. But it was her surprise appearance in Estonia’s Eurovision selection that would forever change her career.
“I got the invitation to perform ‘Runaway’ the night before the competition.”

The song, originally intended for Estonian artist Ines, needed a new voice last minute.
“Less than 24 hours later, I was in Eurovision. It was mind-blowing.”

The performance, brimming with energy and charisma, secured third place and became an instant Eurovision classic.
But Anna’s Eurovision journey didn’t stop there. Before her breakout solo performance, she had already tasted victory as a backing vocalist for Charlotte Nilsson’s winning entry in 1999.
Over the years, she’s participated as a backing singer for various delegations, soaking in the camaraderie and magic of Eurovision. Fast forward to 2025, Anna Sahlene’s Eesti Laul entry Love Me Low combines the essence of classic Eurovision with modern production.

The music video for “Love Me Low”, shot with her partner, blends luxurious visuals with 70s-inspired aesthetics. Drawing subtle inspiration from Eurovision icons like ABBA, Anna Sahlene crafted a timeless tribute to the contest and its legacy.

Eurovision’s loyal fanbase holds a unique place in her heart.
