With another ‘Super Saturday’ of Eurovision national selections on the horizon, we recently spoke to the opening act of Eesti Laul 2024.
Sebi and Dave were fortunate to chat with Joseph Miettinen (vocals) and Otso Tiilama (drums) who make up two-fifths of the band Brother Apollo, hoping to represent Estonia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The other members of the band include Erkki Sippel (guitar, producer), Kare Kipinoinen (guitar) and Olli-Petteri “OP” Paasi (bass guitar).
Brother Apollo were one of five lucky artists chosen to skip the Eesti Laul Semi Final, and we given a spot in the Grand Final. Amazingly, during our conversation, we found out that they almost gave the song away!
“[Bad Boy] was an old song that I had in my drawer of old songs […] so this song was about to be sold to South Korea for a boy band. So if you listen to it after knowing this fact, you might hear some kind of K-Pop vibe there.”
– Joseph Miettinen
Their success is even more unbelievable when you consider that they are a relatively new band. The guys never thought they would even make it to Eesti Laul, and as a result, several of them were not even in Estonia during the introductory Eesti Laul press conference, adding more to the mystery of ‘Who are Brother Apollo?’
When we asked Joseph and Otso what we might see on stage on Saturday, we might have also gotten our answer as to why Estonia’s broadcaster EER picked them to open the show:
“A crazy big show! Flashes, explosions, stuff falling, clothes disappearing […] definitely not just standing still!”
– Joseph & Otso
